How to Write a Meaningful Card: Easter, Housewarming, Confirmation, New Moms

Does your heart ache for that hurting friend, but you don’t know how to encourage them? Do you want to be a spokesperson of God’s truth, but don’t know what to say when you sit down to write a card?

I’ve been there too, even as someone who designs greeting cards for a living!

That’s why I decided to write and send one Naomi Paper Co. card every week this year AND give you an inside look at what I write in each one. I want to make sure you feel confident and inspired to love those around you.

In April I sent five hand-designed cards (including some brand new designs): He is Risen Indeed, My Redeemer Lives, Blessings on Your New Home, Blessings on Your Confirmation, and No Better Mama.

Here’s a look at I wrote inside these cards:

Easter Cards: He is Risen Indeed, My Redeemer Lives

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV)

I love the way that sending a handwritten card is a powerful and practical way to live out this verse and “be the Church” as you encourage other believers and members at your local church.

We may not always have the perfect words, but the good news is, God’s the One speaking through us, and He multiplies our efforts! Don’t let fear hold you back from speaking Truth and encouraging others. Because of God in us, our words have huge power to build someone up. That’s how I chose to use one of our Easter cards this year.

I sent this Easter card to a church member battling cancer with many unknowns at the time. If you or a loved one have ever been through the tough journey of cancer, you know just how overwhelming all the unknowns can feel.

In the face of gut-wrenching trials, this verse in Job 19:25-27 reminds us that we KNOW our Redeemer lives. This powerful Truth gives the suffering soul a firm, calm place to stand. The circumstances keep swirling around, but true rest is only found in God’s unchanging character. This matching tea towel serves as another beautiful reminder of this Truth in the Easter season and beyond.

Here’s what I wrote inside this Easter card:

“You and your family have been in our prayers daily. Jon and I so admire your faith and all the ways you faithfully serve our church family. We are praying for strength (both physically and spiritually) as you walk through treatment and are praying for clarity of the source SOON. Through the uncertainty and unknown, thanks be to God that we can KNOW that our Redeemer lives. I pray this can be a comfort and blessing to you this Easter season.”

Card-Writing Tip:

If you struggle with what words to say, lean on Scripture. Closing the card with a truth from God’s Word offers the greatest comfort as it’s where our ultimate hope and comfort lies.

Blessings On Your New Home Card

This is one of my favorite designs and a signature illustration for Naomi Paper Co!

God Word tells us to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Leviticus 19:18) What better way to do exactly that than by welcoming someone into their new home?

Moving can bring up a wide range of emotions, whether someone’s moving into their first home, a new neighborhood, or a new country. Delivering a thoughtful and welcoming card is the perfect way to encourage new neighbors or homeowners.

Looking for a housewarming gift? This card, tea towel, sticker and notepad all coordinate beautifully and make a cute, memorable gift set.

(In case you haven’t heard, I offer a convenient free add-on for times like these when you want to send a card & matching gift right to your recipient. Scroll to the end of the blog to find out more).

I sent this card to my friend and her husband who just bought their first home together. This was a perfect opportunity to send over a thoughtful card with a few matching products.

Here’s what I wrote in this housewarming card:

“Many blessings on your first HOME! Praying for you as you enter into the many joys and challenges of home-ownership, and that your presence in your new neighborhood will be a blessing to your neighbors, and they to you. Hang this tea towel in your future amazing kitchen when you finish your renovation!”

I recently read The Art of Neighboring, and it has me extra passionate about getting to know and showing love to our physical neighbors. This card & tea towel were a perfect way to encourage that mentality as my friends moved into a new neighborhood of their own.

Blessings On Your Confirmation Card

If you or someone you know is in a denomination that practices confirmation, you know how hard it can be find beautiful, well designed card for the occasion!

This is our first confirmation-specific card, and I love the design. We also recently launched a couple of new graduation cards: Wherever You Go and No Greater Joy, that can also double as confirmation cards!

Graduation and confirmation are both big milestones, marking years of growth and commitment. It’s a perfect opportunity to make a lasting impression as you tell someone just how proud you are of them and encourage them in the next chapter of their faith and life.

We gave this card to my nephew who was being confirmed this year.

Here’s what we wrote in his confirmation card:

“As you begin this journey of becoming a person of faith, we pray that God gives you the courage to be different, to not “conform to the pattern of this world,” but stand firm and centered on the faith! We are always here to help you through this when it gets hard. God bless you!”

Card-Writing Tip:

Express if and how you want to support the recipient. It’s also always helpful to ask them what they need and how you can be there for them. This confirms to the recipient that you’re on their team and your support is real-life and tangible.

No Better Mama Card

Any mother can tell you how difficult motherhood can be at times, especially in those early newborn days. It’s easy to doubt if you’re doing anything right or compare yourself to the seeming success of other moms. I think all moms carry a deep hunger for encouragement, so I’ve been trying to use every “new baby” announcement I hear as an opportunity to send a card and offer that encouragement (even if it seems like they have it all under control).

I gave this card along with a meal to a family with a newborn. Meal-delivery usually turns into a drop-off or a quick “hi, bye,” so I added in a card she won’t easily forget. I also added one of these three sweet mom stickers: One Tough Mama, Motherhood is Kingdom Work, and Cool Mom

Here’s what I wrote in this card for a brand new mom:

“I know there are so many “I have no idea what I’m doing!” moments, especially in these early days of parenthood. But even when we don’t feel like we know what we’re doing, God knew exactly what He was doing when He made you two your sweet baby’s parents! Praying for you all in this time – I hope this meal blesses you! I’m always happy to chat babies, nursing struggles, and all the things!”

Card-Writing Tip:

Delivering meals or other gifts is the perfect opportunity to encourage someone with a card, especially since we typically deliver meals when someone’s going through a time of difficulty and adjustment. There’s no better time to let them know you’re on their team and they’re not alone.
